Olive oil vs rapeseed oil

Olive Oil vs Rapeseed Oil: Which is Best for Your Daily Diet?

One of the most common questions when it comes to nutrition is: which oil is best for everyday use?

Cold-pressed oils certainly have an advantage over refined oils, but the question is which cold-pressed oil is the healthiest.

Olive oil

The oil most commonly used in the Mediterranean diet is obtained by pressing whole olives.

There are different qualities such as refined, virgin and extra virgin oil, or cold-pressed oil – which we refer to in this article.

The nutritional value: olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil is known for its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids compared to most other oils. These fats help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol.

That’s why olive oil is often considered one of the healthiest oils. Extra virgin olive oil also contains polyphenols – powerful antioxidants that have a positive effect on health.

The nutritional value: cold-pressed rapeseed oil

Cold-pressed rapeseed oil has the lowest saturated fat content of any cooking oil, at just 7%, compared to around 14% in olive oil. It also contains ten times more omega-3 fatty acids than olive oil.

These fats are essential for heart, brain and joint health, and there is growing evidence that they can also help with inflammatory conditions like arthritis.

It also contains more vitamin E than olive oil. Just one tablespoon provides a fifth of your daily requirement for this powerful antioxidant.

Culinary applications and versatility

Extra virgin olive oil is ideal for cold dishes, such as salads, dressings and sauces. Due to its lower smoke point, it is less suitable for frying at high temperatures because it can lose its beneficial properties or become harmful when overheated.

In addition, due to its pronounced aroma, it is not suitable for dishes in which we do not want it to be expressed. For example, in mayonnaise or desserts.

On the other hand, rapeseed oil has a high smoke point, making it extremely suitable for frying, baking, sautéing and deep-frying. Its mild flavor allows it to be used in both sweet and savory dishes without overpowering other ingredients.

It can also be used as a butter substitute in the preparation of doughs, sauces and even purees. French cuisine already uses it extensively in the preparation of dressings, sauces and as a base for salads.

Ecological aspect: rapeseed oil is local and sustainable

One of the great advantages of rapeseed oil is that it is often produced locally, which reduces the carbon footprint associated with imports and supports local producers.

Petriana Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil is 100% domestic oil from Croatian fields, and is produced in Petrijanec.

The oil is free of artificial preservatives, trans fats, and GMO ingredients, and is suitable for a variety of dietary regimens.

And although there are many imported rapeseed oils on the market, by choosing domestic oil you support local farmers, promote sustainability, and responsible consumption.

Olive vs. rapeseed oil: summary

Rapeseed oil is a healthier choice for cooking:

  • it has a lower saturated fat content
  • a higher vitamin E content
  • and is more resistant to high temperatures.
  • it contains 10 times the amount of phenolic compounds among all vegetable oils
  • and retains its nutritional properties during cooking.

It is ideal for use in all types of dishes due to its mild and neutral taste – from desserts to savory dishes. Olive oil is also good to have in the kitchen for dressings and salads, when you want its spicy taste.

But cold-pressed rapeseed oil is definitely – the one oil that you must have in your kitchen. Try it and see for yourself!
